Telling Back Pain to Back Off

Wednesday, September 29th, 2021
Workout Back Pain

Our lives are full of compromises and trade-offs. Modern humans can walk upright, and many researchers have linked this ability with increased brain size. As well, this posture allows our hands to be free for carrying objects and manipulating tools, increases our height, and is less energy-intensive. Unfortunately, walking upright puts increased pressure on the spine, and this can lead to back pain. Add to that our propensity to exercise hard and neglect workout recovery, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Here’s are some tips for dealing with your back pain.

Shaun Stay Fit

This is a guest post from Shaun Sinclair, founder, and author of Stay Fit Bug. Shaun is a former 100/200-meter runner and professional athlete.

Look after your BACK!
Because once that goes you are FINISHED!

It really is that simple.

The spine and the muscles surrounding it are the backbones to our physical existence ‘Pun intended’.

However, it is a part of our body that is prone to injury. Now, prevention isn’t a difficult thing to do. But one thing I am certain of is that trying to cure the issue of back pain is an entirely different matter (Yes… not always easy).

  • Good form
  • Good exercise execution
  • Embracing good posture

All of those things are highly important when it comes to protecting your back. Heck, embracing good posture isn’t even something you need to worry about in the gym only. In fact, that has a lot more to do with your activities outside of the weight room.

  • How you sit at your desk in the office.
  • In your bed and how you sleep (sleeping on the floor is still one of the best things you can do).
  • How you position your body when using a computer at home, which of course, is where most of us spend most of our time in today’s world on Facebook and the like.

These lifestyle habits are highly important in regard to back injury prevention. Now let’s see how you can change your lifestyle to proactively protect yourself from back injuries.

Helpful Apps for Patients Going Through Physical Therapy

Thursday, March 5th, 2020
physical therapy

Accidents happen. Sometimes, we simply cannot prevent them. A year ago, I had the misfortune of it happening to me. A major accident left me bed-ridden for well over a month. The recovery was a slow and tedious process. I still experience occasional pain. It really took me a while to regain full control of my body and participate in all the activities I so enjoyed before. While it was not easy, I can say that I am one of the lucky ones who got out of it without any major consequences.

Learn all about physical therapy after an injury

Depending on your situation, recovery may last anywhere from a month to a couple of years. Your body needs time to heal and rebuild its strength. Physical therapy is an extremely important part of the story. Understanding how it works is crucial. Your goal is to learn as much as you possibly can about it and also be fully familiar with the nature of your condition or injury. Each person’s situation will be unique and so will their needs. My back was my problem area. Numbness, pain and poor control of my legs plagued me for months. It was only after I understood how to approach physical therapy that I started seeing tangible results. Take it slow, know what you can and cannot do, and never push yourself too hard.

Don’t forget to take your medication

While regular exercise may be the essential bit of the story, there is no denying that medication also plays its part in the process of regaining your health. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of it. If you tend to forget such things, make sure to set up a reminder for yourself and carefully follow your doctor’s orders. Pop a pill on time and things will become so much easier. Of course, never use too many painkillers and instead look to alleviate your discomfort through natural means. Stick to the advice you’ve been given and don’t forget to eat healthily. Your body needs all the energy it can get.

Commit to an exercise routine & manage your pain

Physical exercise may sound like a terrible idea when you’re in pain but it is, in fact, the only thing that will help get rid of it in the long run. Stick to your routine, try to push your boundaries but never take it too far. I always make an effort to listen to my body. It tends to give you very clear signals about what you can and cannot do. Treat it well and don’t hurt yourself. Learn which types of exercise you can benefit from the most. Don’t be afraid to consult online resources. In fact, I think it was these few apps that have helped me the most on my road to recovery.

Apps to Help With Physical Therapy

Sticking to your goals is honestly the only way to succeed. Perseverance will be rewarded, you just have to have faith and put in the work.

Conclusion

Accidents are sometimes unavoidable. More serious injuries can take a long time to recover from. If you are eager to get back on your feet, you should make an effort to learn more about physical therapy and stick to the prescribed exercise routine. Listen to your body and know which part of it needs the most help. Managing pain, in particular, can have a steep learning curve. Don’t give up. Never neglect your medication and eat well. Your body will thank you for it and you will be able to get back to your normal daily routine soon enough.

While bulging biceps, pecs, and quads might seem sexy, they aren’t nearly as effective as increasing strength and stability as robust rhomboids, lats, and traps. However, not only is it easy to inefficiently train the back, but it is incredibly easy to injure those muscles (and the tissues around them) with improper technique and inaccurate exercises.

Workout Back Pain

If you want a rope-covered back but you don’t want chronic back pain, here are a few common mistakes you should avoid – and if you are already laid low from a back injury, here’s how you can recover and prevent them in the future.

Leveraging Cross-Training to Avoid Overuse Injuries

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

Overuse injuriesEvery athlete worth their salt has hit a plateau. You all know the feeling — suddenly gym sessions feel less productive, gains slow to a crawl, and you start to feel stuck.

Often, the natural response is to train harder and longer, assuming that plateaus can just be powered through, but pushing your body harder when it might actually need to slow down is asking for injury. Injuries aren’t fun for anyone, but if you’re preparing for a competition, race, or big game, it can be a death knell for your training.

Why Am I Hitting a Plateau?

While some plateaus are part of the natural training cycle, others are due to improper training. It’s all too easy to get wrapped up in your own drive and push too hard for too long. The result is a burned-out athlete whose body is breaking down instead of building up.

Avoiding bad training habits seems like it should be common sense, but it’s easier said than done. Everyone wants to be the best, and you get there by training, right? So what’s the difference between pushing and pushing too hard? And how do you toe the line without long-jumping over it?

Unfortunately, there’s no perfect formula for everyone, but with an updated training strategy, it’s a little easier to navigate the minefield of training fatigue. As with most athletic advice, this comes with a strong dose of “listen to your body.”

Plateaus and training fatigue generally stem from overdoing it every time you’re in the gym or under-recovering after you go home. (more…)

Both professional and amateur athletes are no strangers to all kinds of injuries, and anyone who has ever trained has had their fair share of joint dislocations, muscle tears, sprains, and strains.

However, all those issues take their toll not only on the body, but also on one’s mental health. Some injuries are inevitable, but others can be easily avoided by taking some measures of precaution. Warming up before every workout is one of the ways to play it safe at the gym.
