Sorry for posting so many sports related rants lately, but it’s playoff time for both college football and NFL. I just can’t help it. =)

Swole on Super Bowl XLIII – Take 2

Posted January 6, 2009 in Sports No Comments »

After a Surprising Week 1 of the Post Season I Have to Ask…

Now Who Will Make it to Super Bowl XLIII?

This is an update from my first Super Bowl XLIII prediction.

Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers
  • Titans – they’ve been pretty good all year but I believe their offense could be shut down by either the Colts or the Steelers in the AFC Championship game the Ravens in Week 2 of the Playoffs. They may have peaked earlier in the season and Kerry Collins is WAY overrated right now. He will be out of the NFL again by 2010.
  • Steelers – I could see the Steelers advancing to the Super Bowl as long as they don’t play the Colts in the AFC Championship game. Ben Roethelisberger can stay healthy. QB concussions in the NFL do not bode well for future play. Assuming he’s healthy, this team is probably headed for Tampa.

Mariusz Pudzianowski Wins WSM Again (Video)

Posted January 4, 2009 in Sports No Comments »

I think this all went down back in September, but I just found out about it. Usually I watch this whole event on ESPN around New Years, but this year I was too busy with the fam to watch much TV.

In any case, as if you didn’t already know, Mariusz Pudzianowski won his record 5th Worlds Strongest Man title at WSM 2008. This is the video of the final event pitting Mariusz against Derek Poundstone in the Atlas Stones.

Seems to me that Derek had it won until he missed his placement on the last stone. For what it’s worth Derek, I’m sorry that you have to live with that. Good times.

A Rat Fink
Brett ‘Rat Fink’ Favre

Public Enemy #1 aka Brett Favre has successfully thwarted the Patriots attempts to make it into the playoffs this year. Thank you Brett for throwing 3 pics and completing only 50% of your passes.

So many little things could have gone differently, and the Patriots would be in the playoffs.

These four events come to mind first:

New Years Resolutions
New Years Resolutions

It look like my extreme kickboxing career is over. This workout log is probably the last mention of Barbara and Roger Woo’s kickboxing class. We just can’t manage it while taking care of our kids properly.

I mean, I could probably continue to go but my girlfriend can’t go if she can’t find someone to watch the kid, and when I don’t go she doesn’t go, so it’s not like we can take turns. Therefore I draw the conclusion that I won’t be able to do kickboxing anymore at all, unless I’m training in the cardio room at the corporate fitness center where I work. At least they have a couple bags there that I can beat on.

So now I guess it’s up to me to put together my own kickboxing program and stick with it at least twice a week in order to stay in shape. Fortunately I am putting together a new program that I hope will maximize progress in minimal time. See the bottom of this post for just a wee bit more info.

I have been reading exercise and nutrition material written by a gentleman named Dr. John Berardi since the late 1990’s.

Since that time he has published 8 scientific abstracts; 15 scientific papers and textbook chapters; presented at nearly 50 scientific, exercise, and nutrition related conferences; and published countless articles online.

His first articles at Testosterone Magazine so many years ago, provided me with the basis for everything I know about nutrition today. Now I will turn some of that knowledge over to you in the form of Nutrition Tips written by Dr. Berardi himself.

I Got a Free Trial of Bromalite, An All Natural Digestive Supplement

Bromalite Probiotics
Bromalite Probiotics

I have been given a free trial of a supplement called Bromalite. I will start using it on January 2nd 2009, so I don’t have an accurate review quite yet. My plan is to use Bromalite for 30 days and then write a fair, honest, unbiased review, whether negative, positive, or neutral.

Lately I’ve been waking up kinda sick a couple mornings each week, especially after eating a big meal the previous evening. Basically, I have been experiencing gastrointestinal distress. I’ve always had really annoying issues digesting dairy and wheat products, so when I remembered that I got this bottle of Bromalite, I decided that I would try it.

Sandbag Training Video

Posted December 15, 2008 in Conditioning 2 Comments »

I recently discovered sandbag training. Similar to kettlebell training, Cross Fit training, and P90X training; this is a revolutionary form of training that should really be considered for functional workouts.

Now, you might laugh at me for calling any of those training methodologies ‘revolutionary’, but they are all training styles that fall outside of strict free weight training, cardio training, powerlifting, or any such well-defined training methodology fad. Of course, all of these idea have led to eye-opening, insightful ideas about training and conditioning.

So, let me introduce sandbag training. Allow me to entice you with this one video, and later I will write more about this methodology with some links to get sandbag training equipment. Anyway, check this out:

13 Ways to Get in Shape While Accomplishing Something Useful

Mowing the Lawn
Mowing the Lawn

After initially proofreading this post I was thinking to myself that I wouldn’t post it because it’s not a training article, and quite frankly some of the activities are pretty foo-foo. But on second thought, some of these ideas apply more to men, while others apply more to women, so there is something in this list for everyone.

I recommend referring to this list on your next boring spring, summer, or autumn weekend. When you are looking for something to do around the house or around the yard, these ideas might inspire you to create, clean, fix, or just burn extra calories.

After all being swole doesn’t always have to be about squatting, benching, power cleaning (the Olympic lift), or sprinting. Being swole is much more about the path we take to get there, than the end result. Although when you look great naked, the end result is pretty sweet.

Christmas Tree

Hello to all Project Swole subscribed readers and also to any new visitors that are stopping by. As you can see from the dates on my recent posts, I have not been posting very often since before Thanksgiving.

So why is this? I have been busy, busy, busy. Got alot going on trying to manage the job, the clients, the Project Swole, and trying to get a new social bookmarking site off the ground. Details about this coming later this week or early next week.

The reality is that December is not a time to slack. Therefore I am going to make a pledge to post nearly every day for the rest of the month, a practice I hope to continue into next year.

Sexy Girl Power Clean Demo

Posted December 5, 2008 in Weight Training 2 Comments »

I found this one surfing around on YouTube watching Olympic lifting clips. It’s a pretty good demonstration of how to execute a proper power clean.

Don’t get me wrong, power cleans take a bit of practice to get the form right, but once you get it you will want to clean every day.

Power cleans help us with force development. By using Olympic exercises like this, you will train your central nervous system (CNS) to develop maximal force while recruiting all the muscles in the body to work as a single unit. Good stuff.

The 8 Worst Reasons to Lift Weights

Posted November 24, 2008 in Healthy Lifestyle 28 Comments »

There are at least 100 good reasons to lift weights. Fat loss, muscle gain, sports specific training, powerlifting, general fat loss, and so much more. These are all great reasons to start weight training.

Have you ever thought there might be some bad reasons to lift weights? I was contemplating this while watching the New England Patriots stomp the Miami Dolphins yesterday, and I decided that the following 8 reasons to lift are probably ill conceived for the most part. What do you think?
