The Four HCG Diet Phases
A number of HCG diets use their own variations of the hCG diet menu. Many follow the 500-calorie-a-day diet, but in theory, 500 calories are just too low to maintain proper health. Other HCG diets increase the calorie intake to 800 or 1200 calories a day. HCG dieters have had varying levels of success with all of these plans, at varying levels of average weight loss.
Most HCG diets use a 2-day gorge, followed by a 3 or 4-phase calorie restriction cycle.
Phase 1: During this 2-day preparation period you should increase your water intake to no less than 2 liters a day and start taking your HCG supplement. Before starting Phase 2 of the HCG calorie restriction diet, you should eat everything and anything you want for these 2 days. There are no food or calorie restrictions at this time.

For those who have already worked hard to build muscle and want to retain as much as possible, you should consider a strength-based workout routine. Lifting heavy weights, with compound exercises, for 5 or fewer reps, is the best way to maintain muscle mass while dieting.
For muscle or strength gains, you should try either of the following two routines:
Phase 2: This is a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) phase that should last between 4-8 weeks depending on the amount of weight you need to lose. You should stick to the strict diet guidelines outlined below for the duration of this phase. Exercise should be used in addition to the diet and HCG supplement. At least 3 workouts lasting at least 30 minutes are required per week.
Phase 3: During this 3-week phase, you can adjust your menu to eat normal, healthy foods as long as they do not contain sugars and high levels of unhealthy fats. Fast foods, trans fats, candy, and soft drinks are prohibited in this phase. Depending on your goals, 400-600 calories per day can be added to the daily intake in order to increase metabolism and transition to a healthy maintainable diet.
This might be a good time to increase your exercise levels as well. I recommend training 4 or 5 times each week for 45 minutes per session. This could include weightlifting, endurance and/or high-intensity cardiovascular training, or your sport of choice.
After Phase 3, if you have not reached your goal, it is advisable to cycle back to Phase 2 for several more weeks.
Phase 4: this will be the post hCG Diet maintenance phase. At this point, you should have reached your HCG Diet goal and you must continue with the changes you have made to your lifestyle and eating habits. You should be able to maintain your new relationship with food; and lifestyle changes including water consumption, a healthy sleeping schedule, and a sensible workout routine.
It is possible to increase calories by 100-200 per day depending on your new goals – whether you want to continue to slowly lose weight, or perhaps this would be a great time to focus on adding muscle, increasing strength, or conditioning yourself for a sport or hobby.
How Many Calories Should You Eat?
At this time I recommend the following calorie restrictions based on goal body weight:

Consider setting short-term body weight goals. For example, if you weigh 400 lbs, you might want to set your initial goal to 275 lbs rather than setting an extreme initial goal of 150 lbs. A man weighing 220 lbs might set an initial goal of 170 lbs. Check with your doctor if you don’t know what your ideal body weight should be.
Keeping short-term goals realistic will help motivate you in the beginning stages of your HCG diet.
The HCG Diet Nutrition Plan
The HCG Diet Phase 2 is very similar to an intermittent fast. You should not eat before lunch or after dinner. During Phase 3 you should consider adding a healthy breakfast or adding some additional food to your lunch and dinner to meet the calorie requirements.
If you have any concerns, talk with your doctor or nutritionist before starting your diet plan and ask questions regarding the menu options listed below. If you have diabetes or certain food allergies, you may need to adjust the menu plan. Again, talk to your doctor or a licensed nutritionist with those kinds of questions.
Breakfast:Tea or coffee in any quantity without sugar. Only one tablespoonful of milk is allowed in 24 hours. Saccharin or Stevia may be used.
- Choose a protein. 6-8 oz of veal, beef, chicken breast, turkey, fresh white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp. A 6-8 oz piece of meat should be the size of 2 decks of playing cards. All visible fat must be removed before cooking, and the meat must be weighed raw. It must be boiled or grilled without additional fat. High-fat fish like salmon, eel, herring and dried or pickled fish are not allowed. Canned tuna is allowed. The skin and any visible fat must be removed from chicken and turkey, and only white meat should be consumed. Additional meat alternatives are listed below.
- Choose a vegetable. 1-2 servings of vegetables to be chosen from the following: spinach, chard, chicory, beet greens, green salad, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage. Other vegetables are permitted, but the best results come from sticking to the vegetables above.
- Choose a grain. One breadstick (grissino), one melba toast, and one slice of whole grain or pumpernickel bread. Other whole-grain foods are permitted, but the best results come from sticking to those listed above. Pasta and noodles are not allowed.1 serving of oatmeal is allowed, but it must be plain, unsweetened, unprocessed oatmeal. You may sweeten your oatmeal manually with 1 tablespoon of honey. You can also use the fruits listed below to flavor your oatmeal.
- Choose a fruit. An apple, orange; a handful of berries, grapes, raisins; or one-half grapefruit may be eaten. Other fruits are permitted, but high sugar and high starch fruits like watermelon and bananas should be avoided. The grapefruit should not be sweetened with sugar.
Dinner:The same menu choices as lunch.
The fruit or the breadstick may be eaten between meals instead of with lunch or dinner, but not more than four items listed for lunch and dinner may be eaten at one meal.
What Else Can You Eat or Drink on the HCG Diet?
Tea, coffee, plain water, mineral water, diet drinks, natural sugar-free fruit juices like lemon and lime juice, and seasonings are permitted on the HCG Diet. At least 2 liters of water a day is recommended.
Salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweet basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, etc., may be used for seasoning, but no oil, butter, or dressing.
Specially prepared unsweetened and low-calorie foods can be tentatively used, but the total daily intake must not exceed 500 calories if the best possible results are to be obtained. The daily diet intake should contain 200 grams of fat-free protein and a very small amount of starch.
Occasionally you are allowed one egg – boiled, poached, or raw – but you should add three egg whites for every whole egg. The egg and egg whites may be combined with vegetables to make an omelet, and a slice of cheese can be used. This omelet would replace the meat, vegetable, and grain requirements for one meal.
Cottage cheese and plain yogurt made from skim milk may occasionally be used instead of meat or grain.
A glass of milk may occasionally be used in place of grain.
Nuts and oils should not be consumed due to their high fat and high total calories.
