Other workout logs are coming shortly. I’ll try to whip up some workout logs for the full body routine, 3×5, and some of the other routines too, but right now I’m working on the Project Swole redesign so don’t hold your breath.

How to Gain Muscle and Lose Fat Most Effectively

Your Questions

I get plenty of questions in various comments throughout the website, but I also get comments and questions via the Project Swole Contact Form.

Generally I address those questions through e-mail, but often I do not have the time to reply to each and every question personally.

The category, Your Health Questions is a more proactive approach to answering your questions so that everyone can benefit from the Q & A.

“Hi,

First, let me say thank you for this website and all the useful information you post here. I am 45 years old, at 6 foot 1 inches and 210 pounds, and my goal is to simply change my weight distribution (don’t mind weighing 210 if it’s muscle and not fat).

Since I am a ‘hard gainer’, I have read your recommendations on the best exercises/workouts to build mass, and I have two additional questions.

First, I’ve continually heard the following: higher reps + lighter weight = definition, and lower reps + heavier weight = mass. My question is, what is the sweet spot for mass AND definition? For example, if I do three sets of curls, how many reps for each set – 12, 10, 8 or maybe 10, 8, 6 (with progressively higher weight)?

Second, what about diet? I’ve also heard that you should eat like a horse – lots of protein and carbs. Of course, if you overdo it, you’ll gain fat as well. So again, where is the sweet spot?

Thank you!
Greg”

Things You Shouldn’t Believe About Nursing Agencies

nursing agencies

Many nurses are switching to agency nursing as it offers a lot of benefits that traditional nursing does not. It provides the flexibility to pick the hours you want to work and pays better. Also, agency nurses play a critical role in fulfilling staffing vacancies in times of need.

Fad Diets are Wrong for Your Child

Posted January 11, 2010 in Kids 4 Comments »

Fat KidThe childhood obesity epidemic is real. Our kids are fat, lazy, bored, depressed, and for the most part unhealthy.

Don’t believe me? Doug Robb of Health Habits wrote about a study comparing childhood obesity in 1967 and now.

The findings: children considered obese in 1967 are considered normal by today’s standards.

What can we do about childhood obesity?

My Review

I posted an article written by the authors of the book Hardcore Circuit Training for Men the other day, called Losing Weight with Circuit Training. Since then I found my copy of the book and finished looking through it.

Here is what I think:

First and foremost, despite the book’s title, this is not just a book for men. These circuits can be used and adapted by women and even kids. It can be used by weightlifters, triathlon athletes, regular athletes, MMA fighters, boxers, and pretty much anyone else who is looking to develop their conditioning.

Project Swole on Facebook

Posted January 5, 2010 in Social Networking 1 Comment »

I’m not 100% sure where I’m going with this, but Project Swole is now on Facebook with a very basic Facebook Page. Soon I’ll get around to pimping it out and I’m currently learning a bunch of different ways to post to it. To become a fan, go ahead and click on this link: Project Swole on Facebook.

The new design will have an easy-to-find Facebook badge so if you forget to join, there will be ample opportunities at a later date.

In the meantime, let me know how best I can utilize the new Facebook Page. I have some ideas, but would like to hear from you all as well.

California Bans Trans-Fats in Restaurants

Happy New Year!

Trans-fats
Trans-fats

Project Swole readers already know that trans-fats are bad for us. We also know partially hydrogenated oils are bad for us. These fats are not essential and should comprise about 0.0% of our dietary intake of fats. Now those who have homes or apartments in California can rest easy because trans-fats are on their way out!

Several states have already banned partially hydrogenated oil in restaurants, but California is the first one to outlaw trans-fats with fines of up to $1000 for an infraction. You can thank our hero Arnold Schwarzenegger for this latest step to improving the American diet.

Trans-fats are arguably the worst fats you can eat, but should the government have the right to make laws against selling those foods in restaurants?

This training routine is designed for you to gain strength. That’s it.

So you have already been through two or three Werewolf Training for Muscle Gain cycles. You gained 5-10 pounds of muscle in that time and you got a little stronger. You are psyched about your progress but you’re a little bored with the program.

It is time to change up your training a little bit, but you know you can’t jump right into a strict fat loss phase, or you risk losing most of your new muscle. What to do? What to do?

Weightlifting Tool to Calculate Your 1 Rep Max

1 Rep Max Calculator

I had published this post once before, but recently a couple people have asked for such a tool, so I’m busting it out again for all the new Project Swole readers.

There are many strength training programs that involve calculating your 1 rm or 1 repetition maximum. Some programs want you to use a % of your 1 rm, which is sometimes even harder to calculate.

1 Rep Max Calculator
Calculate Your 1 Rep Max

Most of us do not how how to figure out this number without performing the actual rep itself. Use this easy calculator to get a basic idea of how much weight you can lift once.

Dabigatran, Childhood Obesity, and the Patriots

Posted December 7, 2009 in Kids, Medical, News of the Day, Sports 2 Comments »

Here’s some recent health news for the day.

Dabigatran – a Potential Alternative to Warfarin

In an issue that is close to my own heart, there may be a new, better medication for controlling chronic blood clots. The drug, called Dabigatran Etexilate, is just as effective at controlling clots as Warfarin/Coumadin, but is far easier to manage.

Regarding Dabigatran, Dr. Sam Schulman of McMaster University and the Henderson Research Center in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada said this:

“For patients and health-care providers, Dabigatran is a far more convenient drug than Warfarin because it has no known interactions with foods and minimal interactions with other drugs and therefore does not require routine blood-coagulation testing.”

Acai Roots: Freeze Dried Acai Powder

Acai Roots Acai Powder
Acai Roots Acai Powder

I tried some of this stuff and it’s pretty darn good!

By now you are probably somewhat familiar with the name acai; this powerful fruit that grows in the Brazilian Amazon and is now becoming a sensation worldwide. However, not many of you have probably heard of Freeze Dried Powder Acai.

Well folks, let me explain; the name stands for a specific process which the fruit goes through after it is harvested. However there are different technologies that can be use to maximize the benefits of the fruits using this process.

Unlike other acai berry extracts (4:1), Acai Roots pure freeze dried acai is extracted from the acai berry using cutting edge low temperature technology, which preserves the majority of antioxidants and nutrients found in the acai berry. Other suppliers often use a different method to extract due to a lower cost; these methods are often based on the utilization of heat (spray drying) along with additional substances, which causes the elimination of most health benefits of the acai berry.

Project Swole’s First YouTube Video

Posted December 3, 2009 in Social Networking, Videos 1 Comment »

It is a milestone for Project Swole! This is the very first Project Swole video anywhere. Unfortunately I outsourced it to someone in India and it just might be the very worst video I have ever seen in my life. Go ahead and watch it but I don’t blame you if you hit ‘STOP’ after just 10 seconds.

Let’s hope the next Project Swole video at least has music or a voice over. Yikes!
