Sports 11 Comments »Please tell me, how did Florida lose that game to Mississippi?
On September 27, 2008, the Florida Gators (10-1) lost 31 – 30 to Eli Manning’s college team Ole Miss (7-4), but if they had not lost that game they would probably be #1 or #2 in the nation and they would definitely have an 11-0 record rather than 10-1.
Update: my bad, Florida is currently ranked #2 in the AP polls as of Sunday 11/23.
I mean Tim Tebow passed for 319 yards and one touchdown, and he rushed for another 2 touchdowns. Apparently the offense took the first and third quarters off, and the defense basically took the whole game off.

Diet,
Nutrition Tip 3 Comments »I have been reading exercise and nutrition material written by a gentleman named Dr. John Berardi since the late 1990’s.
Since that time he has published 8 scientific abstracts; 15 scientific papers and textbook chapters; presented at nearly 50 scientific, exercise, and nutrition related conferences; and published countless articles online.
His first articles at Testosterone Magazine so many years ago, provided me with the basis for everything I know about nutrition today. Now I will turn some of that knowledge over to you in the form of Nutrition Tips written by Dr. Berardi himself.
Today’s Topic – Being Prepared to Eat Right

Social Networking 5 Comments »I am a social networking and social bookmarking addict. I have profiles on both Facebook and MySpace, and I bookmark URLs on such sites as Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Propeller, Reddit, Delicious, and HealthRanker. Some of those sites such as Delicious are simply for bookmarking, while others like Digg are for voting on, and commenting on, popular news stories.
Health Ranker is one of my favorite social bookmarking websites due to its health and fitness theme (I hear a new site is coming out soon targeted specifically for exercise and nutrition, but that’s a discussion for a different day). I’ve just never been able to get my hands on a browser bookmarklet for HealthRanker.com. All that changes today…

Workout Logs 2 Comments »This was a very busy week as we saw a round of layoffs smash their way through our ranks at work. One of the principle software engineers was let go today, thereby increasing my workload. Due to this increased workload, I barely got in a second weight training workout this week. However, I did get in all 3 kickboxing workouts, which is still good news.
Also check out a squat demonstration at the bottom of this post.

Today’s Topic – Eating Pasta
Today we get to examine a nutritional strategy of eating pasta for maximal fat loss, strength gain, and health. I personally don’t mind pasta too much, at least whole wheat pasts, but let’s see what Dr. John Berardi has to say about it.

Workout Logs No Comments »Well, things have kind of fallen off a bit for a couple weeks. Between family medical issues, an increased workload, and a stubborn child, I have had recent difficult both making it to kickboxing and lifting weights. Because of this I feel myself becoming softer, smoother, and in poor cardiovascular condition. Eating junk food at Halloween didn’t help either.
Check out the Olympic front squat chick in the video at the bottom of this post, if you get bored with my training log rant.

Weight Training 2 Comments »In a recent training log, I mention Zercher squats as an alternative to barbell squats, and you might have asked, “What is a Zercher squat?”
So, What is a Zercher Squat?
The Zercher squat was developed by Ed Zercher, a well-known powerlifter and strongman from St. Louis who competed back in the ’30s. Rumor has it that Zercher’s home gym lacked a squat rack, so he would load a barbell on the floor, squat in front of it, hold it in the crook of his arms and lift the weight with his legs and lower back.

Martial Arts 3 Comments »Black and Blue Entertainment, LLC presents the third installment of its mega-successful event Cage Fight MMA! The second show back in August was truly a spectacle to behold and has been praised around southern NH as one of the best MMA cage fights ever put on in this area.
Each match up was tight, and the main event really had a high quality UFC look and feel to it. With CageFight MMA events gaining popularity so quickly, it seems like highly qualified fighters will be participating on a more frequent basis.

Supplements 16 Comments »Acai Berry Juice
I’ll start off by saying Sambazon has the very best acai juice I’ve ever tasted. You can get some of their juice by clicking here ==> browse the Sambazon store.
But, I bet you want to know why you should drink acai juice. Let me tell you why…
Why Acai Juice is So Good
If you don’t already know, let me introduce you to acai (ah-sigh-ee). Acai is the fruit that is turning the heads of world-class athletes and health-conscious people everywhere.
Acai has a rich berry flavor that tastes amazing in a variety of products including juices, nutrition bars, smoothies, and much more.
This super fruit is packed with more antioxidants than:
- blueberries
- pomegranates
- cherries
- cranberries
- red wine
Acai also contains loads of the following healthy nutrients:
- essential Omega fats
- phytonutrients
- branched chain amino acids (BCAAs)
- dietary fiber

Nutrition Tip 1 Comment »When you think about losing or gaining weight, you think about strict calorie deficient diets with bland food to lose weight, and sugary flatulence-inducing weight gainer shakes to gain weight. These ideas are not reality.
The average American gains 2 pounds a year, which is 7000 total calories. Divided by 365 days, that’s about 19 or 20 calories a day. It makes sense then, if you want to gain weight over the course of your lifetime, possibly to put on a couple pounds of muscle each year in order to stay fit and healthy, just eat 20 calories a day over your maintenance level.
It also makes sense that if you want to stay lean and trim for the rest of your life, with no major weight fluctuations, just eat 20 calories under your maintenance level each day.

Weight Training 2 Comments »Hello everyone. I have been busy lately working my 2 jobs plus side projects plus weight training and kickboxing. Today my truck broke down and is in the garage, and my kid is in the hospital. I’m also sick with a nasty cold, didn’t even get out of bed on Sunday. All these things equal: I haven’t had time to write a decent post, so I’m just going to post this video demonstrating some Olympic lifts.
Olympic Lifting
Here we see this dude busting out a power snatch and a couple clean and jerks. These are great exercises for overall strength and conditioning, but not necessarily for specific strength or for bodybuilding purposes. If you are looking to be a powerlifter or a bodybuilder, chances are Olympic lifting is not for you, at least not on a consistent basis.

Workout Logs No Comments »This was another solid 4-workout week: 2 kickboxing classes and 2 weight training sessions. Everything feels good except that I’m only getting about 6 hours of sleep per night on average. If I were to force myself into a healthier lifestyle, I would be getting 8 hours of sleep each night.
After 5 long nights of 5-6 hours of sleep combined with staying up late on the weekends, I’m pretty much beat on Friday. My only salvation is that I don’t get much strenuous exercise on the weekend, which helps me to recover.

Initially, you thought fat people eat so much food because it gives them pleasure. Well guess what? You were wrong! In fact just the opposite is true.
Dopamine
Dopamine, a substance that makes us feel good, is one of the best-known neural chemicals. Though it is often thought of primarily as a manufactured substance it is actually produced naturally in the body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that activates dopamine receptors, which makes us feel a sense of euphoria.

Workout Logs 2 Comments »A decent week in the gym and the dojo, I managed two sessions of weight training and 2 kickboxing workouts. In the middle of the week, my PC at work died and I struggled through trying to get it back online while simultaneously attempting to finish work on a software project that was due on Friday. This resulted in my missing my kickboxing workout on Wednesday.
Both kickboxing workouts were excellent, especially Friday’s, which is surprising because I lifted from 3:30-4:30 then kickboxed at 6. Somehow I had just as much energy for kickboxing as I did for weight training, and I think this is due to my post workout nutrition strategy.

Workout Logs 3 Comments »A subpar week indeed, due to stressors at the office and at home, I was unable to make my workouts for Thursday and Friday. This was both good and bad. Good because I didn’t sleep much last week and was starting to feel sore. Bad for discipline and consistency reasons.
Kickboxing was good for the two days that I attended. My cardiovascular condition is improving with each high intensity thai kickboxing workout. Weight lifting was good for the one workout that I completed. Strength was up all around. Check out the stiff leg deadlifter at the bottom as today’s inspirational video.

Check this out: in recent Consumer Reports news, we find out that some cereals have more sugar than a glazed Dunkin donut. The worst offenders are the sticky sweet cereals like Golden Crisp and Honey Smacks, and I tend to think that my beloved Cocoa Pebbles really aren’t that great either. I’ve mentioned time and again to stay away from food in boxes, especially sugary breakfast cereal.
So what are we to do? You know your kids are going to want something sweet and tasty for breakfast, and in all likelihood you probably don’t want to eat eggs, egg whites, or eggbeaters every day either. Here are some tips to make breakfast both tasty and healthy. I’m happy that I can promote another of my favorite cereals, Frosted Mini-Wheats… good stuff!

Workout Routines 28 Comments »There is a neat new program at https://pull-ups-training.com/ that will help you increase your pull ups. Check it out then read this article.
Someone beat me to the punch. I was going to write a program like this based on what I saw at The 100 Push Ups Challenge, but I just didn’t make the time to do it. So what I will do instead, is to explain how to work this 20 Pull Ups program into your regular training routine so as not to sacrifice the rest of your muscles while on this program. Get ready for some 2-a-day workouts!
The premise of 20 Pull Ups is to combine several training methodologies throughout the week by doing several sets of pull ups each day. This is a 6-8 week program for those who can already do at least 5 pull ups. However, if you can’t do 5 pull ups, there is a slightly longer program that you can use, which incorporates assisted pull ups for the first 4 weeks. Either way, you should give this program a try if you want to be able to do more pull ups.

Workout Logs 1 Comment »Finally! I pulled off 5 workouts in 5 days. In order to do it I had to train twice on Friday, but I still made it! 3 kickboxing sessions and 2 weight training sessions were completed without a hitch.
If you have a heavy bag at home, try this kickboxing workout:
One rep: Jab, Cross, Hook, 2 quick low kicks (thai kicks), and 3 burpee/push-up combos.
See how many reps you can do in a 4 minute round. Take a minute to rest and drink water. Repeat for 5 rounds. After 25 minutes of this, you will be sweating like a little piggy. Read on to learn about my workouts for the week.
