Staying Young in Mind and Body

Keeping Your Mind Young As You Grow Older

As we grow old, it is important to stay active and healthy, but you should not just concentrate on enhancing the body. The mind is just like any other organ and needs stimulating to keep it working at its best. There are some simple things that you can do to keep yourself fit and healthy in body and mind.fruit bowl

Eat the Right Food

There is real evidence to suggest that eating healthily and having the right foods can help with your brain’s health. People who eat fish once a week, for example, have a 60% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This is because fish has omega-3 fatty acids that help to slow brain degeneration.

Many things can rejuvenate your body and mind; keeping an eye on your diet can be the best of them all.

Stay Social

Keeping yourself social is another good way of stimulating the brain and keeping it healthy. Chatting with friends and family stimulate areas of the brain that are responsible for executive functions. These include planning, response control, and decision making. Who knew that having a chat with your friends was so beneficial?

Keep Active

Exercise is not just for the body, staying active is also good for your brain. Maintaining a good level of activity can dramatically improve cognitive function. This is because exercising helps to pump oxygen and glucose rich blood around the 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain. It contributes to fuel all the brain cells and stop them from dying.

Forgetting Can Be a Good Sign

With the best will in the world, you will never be able to remember everything that happens. We are exposed to so many experiences during the day that the non-essential things are screened out by the brain. If you forget something, it is not always because of a problem; it can be the sign of a healthy mind trying to organize itself.

Naps Are Good

You should not worry about taking a nap during the day; sleeping for just 6 minutes  can have a big effect on memory and cognitive function. As we get older, our body and mind will need more time to rest, which is a good thing and should not be avoided if possible.

There is no doubt that looking after your body and mind, will help to prevent many problems in old age. Staying as active as possible in body and mind will benefit you in the long-term.
