The Twilight Workout Routine
I have seen the movie and I was not altogether impressed, although it was not a bad movie. I would give it a 7 out of 10, while IMDB has it at 4.5 out of 10. It is a thrilling romance/monster story for teenage girls. Everything about the flick is targeted at tween girls and that’s all there is to it.
What I was more impressed by, is the evolution of Taylor Lautner. In nine months, this 17 year old boy gained 30 pounds of muscle to better pull off his changing into a werewolf for New Moon. Granted, if he didn’t gain the weight the part of Jacob Black would have been recast.

Taylor Lautner used to be a 5’10″, 140-pound fairly ripped martial artist, but now he’s a weightlifting beast. So, just how did Taylor Lautner gain 30 pounds of muscle so quickly?
He maximized his genetic potential, and you can too.

This kid was always gifted genetically and physiologically.
At age 6 he started studying karate and by age 7 he was already winning tournaments. By age 8 he was training under seven-time world karate champion Mike Chat and ended up winning 3 gold metals representing the US in the World Karate Association. By age 12 he had 3 Junior World Championships and was ranked number one in the world for NASKA’s Black Belt Open Forms, Musical Weapons, Traditional Weapons and Traditional Forms.

Taylor is also a start football and baseball player. He can play running back, middle line backer, center field, and second base. He’s also part of a hip-hop dance group and can most likely break dance with the best of them.
Like I said, Taylor Lautner is genetically predisposed to being an athletic specimen.

Because of his athletic lifestyle as a child, Taylor already has the muscle maturity of a young adult. The neurological pathways are well defined for him to maximize the mind-muscle connection for weight training. This helps prove that focus and concentration is an important part of training. The more efficiently you can recruit your muscle fibers, the more progress you will see.
Since Taylor Lautner was already so small, thanks in part to his need for low body weight as a martial artist, it was easy for him to stack on the first 15-20 pounds of muscle. He probably pulled that off in the first 5 months of training.
This was essentially the amount of muscle that, as a man, his body would be able to carry comfortably. A normal man, with a full time job and other responsibilities, can accomplish this in 12-24 months. It took Mr. Lautner about half a year to do it thanks to his celebrity lifestyle, previous athletic training, and a hell of a lot of motivation, focus, and drive.
Since Taylor Lautner is an actor, he could easily dedicate every waking hour to eating and training. From what I understand, he is quoted as saying:
“I get into the gym every single day, seven days a week, two hours a day, eat as much as I possibly can. I had to basically kill myself [in the gym].”
However, as most of you know, this can lead to serious overtraining and loss of muscle. Taylor reflected this issue in another interview, saying:
“I was in the gym five days a week, two hours a day. At one point, I was going seven days straight. I had put on a lot of weight, and then i started losing it drastically, so I was worried. It turned out I was overworking myself.”
He wasn’t giving his body enough rest, taking some time off between weight training sessions. Lack of sleep also played a role in hindering his success, so he scaled back to 5 days a week of weight training and concentrated on getting more sleep. Man, did it pay off.
Taylor now knows that eating enough of the right foods should not be underestimated. He admitted in an interview that maintaining his aggressive diet was the hardest part of his weight gain routine. He reflected:
“At one point I had to shove as much food in my body as possible to pack on calories. My trainer wanted me to do six meals a day and not go two hours without eating. Basically I’m supposed to eat everything I can and try to keep it lean. Lean meats and veggies.”
Taylor said of his personal trainer Jordan Yuam:
“He’s really talented. He helped me a lot with this process. He’s always on set, like, shoving food in my mouth. Literally, I’d be talking to somebody and he comes up with a plate. He wakes me up in the morning. He’s like, ‘Take this protein shake.’ I’m like, ‘I’m sleeping.’ Yeah, I have a lot of people to thank.”

Taylor said in an interview that he likes to begin his workouts with a light warm up, usually by running on the treadmill. He likes to use a lot of compound and body weight exercises such as push-ups, squats, dips, pull-ups, and lunges.
Based on everything I read, I can guess at what his training routine probably looked like.
