Congratulations! You’ve reached the age of retirement! This is such an exciting milestone in any person’s life. You’ve worked incredibly hard to get here and you should definitely celebrate this new stage of your life. It’s not time to give up fitness but it probably is time to branch out and try something new, so long as you’re staying active. New activities can come in the form of active and inactive, physical and cerebral, don’t limit yourself just because you’re retired.

It isn’t uncommon to find yourself wondering what you’re going to do after retirement. It can seem kind of daunting and if you’re feeling uncertain about it, it’s going to be ok. There are a ton of different things you can try and activities that you can do that will add fulfillment and enjoyment to your life. 

Here are eight great ways to stay active during your first year of retirement.

Set a Life PR

The first thing to do on our list is to create a set of fitness goals and work to achieve them on a reasonable and attainable schedule. This doesn’t mean bench pressing or squatting the heaviest weight of your life, it could just mean staying fit in retirement. Perhaps you want to get down to and maintain healthy body weight. Or maybe a race is more up your alley – there are safe and healthy races to enter, from 5ks to simple obstacle courses. If you’re a hiker or a rower, there are probably mountains you haven’t hiked and rivers you haven’t kayaked. Don’t settle for a sedentary lifestyle, when you still have the time and energy to accomplish a new personal life best.

The second thing to do on our list is working on home improvement projects. These activities are not only fun, but they are very fulfilling as well. Who doesn’t love that feeling of seeing the fruits of your labor come together in a brand new and beautiful way? So, go ahead; upgrade your kitchen, repaint your bedroom, or buy some new furniture.


Traveling is another fun and exciting thing that you can do during your retirement. Whether it’s exploring different cities in Paris or taking in the local cuisine in Italy, there are so many different experiences you can explore. Maybe you can even take the time to enhance intimacy with your partner while you’re traveling. New Hobby

Taking on a new hobby or activity can also be a lot of fun! You can learn to cook a new recipe, you can take walks in the park, there really isn’t a limit to the new things you can try and experiment with.


Writing is another really wonderful thing that you take up. At this point in your life, you have lived. You have years of wisdom, experience, and stories to tell. So why not tell them? Write your memoirs or simply write some beautiful poetry. Write wherever the wind takes you.

Become a Volunteer

You can also become a volunteer. There are animal shelters, hospitals, soup kitchens, so many different places that need extra help and extra hands. These activities can be very fulfilling and you’ll be doing something wonderful for people in need.

Learn a New Language

Learning a new language can also be a fun activity to take up. Not only will you learn how to speak your favorite language, but it will help keep your mind sharp too. If you find a public class that offers a language course, you can opt for that too. It can be a great way to not only learn your dream language but maybe even make some new friends as well.

Get a Part-time Job

The last neat thing that you can try during your first year of retirement is to get a part-time job. This may seem kind of silly considering you just stopped working. But often times people find that without work, they tend to feel a little bit monotonous. So, if you find yourself feeling that way too, it’s ok. It isn’t a bad idea to seek some part-time work. It can help to keep you busy and active and make your day a little more enjoyable.

So, get out there! There is a lot to see, do, and experience still. Whatever you do, be sure to stay active in retirement. Make the most of life and freedom – enjoy your retirement years!
