Hey steve
Good article, like your section of weight belts, Ive been telling the guys at the gym to get them of!
Have a read of this article by Tony Boutagy, http://tonyboutagy.blogspot.com/2009/05/squatting-how-i-teach-squat-and-reasons.html
really good, he talks alot about letting the knee travel over the toes to reduce the strain but on the lower back. Tell me what you think.
Cheers

Sorry to hear about that man. I really hope you can get that knee healthy again, with or without surgery.

Adam I feel your pain literally. My right knee is in pretty bad shape from a skateboarding accident about 10 years ago. I can't do much at all anymore, and I'm only 26! It hurts every day and is stiff every morning. I'm constantly having to ice it. Like Steve said I'm not really qualified to give advice, but I have been through physical therapy and they had me do wall squats (with an exercise ball behind my back) as well as some other exercises to strengthen my quads.

If you don't know how to do them a simple google search will give you plenty of information. Even if starting out you can only go down an inch it's better than nothing. The key is to do as much as you can without too much pain. If it hurts then you're doing too much. Due to my injury I had a lot of muscle atrophy. My right quad was 2" smaller than my left!

I'm still on the road to recovery, but I hope to get better without surgery. Right now surgery doesn't seem to promising for me. I may need to get a second opinion to be sure if the physical therapy doesn't help.

Good luck to you.

I'm not sure if I'm qualified to give you advice about this. Maybe bodyweight squats or tabata squats would be good for you, but you should talk to your doctor and a physical therapist before changing your workout routine to include exercises that could potentially worsen your knees.

Hello,

I have bad knees. Torn cartillage and arthritis, with mild tendonitis and knocked knees (the opposite of rickets). I cant really squat anything heavy, so is it a good idea to do squats with a low weight and high reps? I know this wont be as good as doing heavy weight and few reps but its better than nothing i think.

Would i get some of the benefits of squats? or would it be better to leave the knees alone and do something else.

Thanks for any advice, and thanks for the site in general.

thanks brother!!
last week i was squatting 315lb x 3
i used good plates (eleiko ones, i think). today, someone told me that good plates like Ivanko or Eleiko are manufactured to a tolerance of +/- 2%. That means a 45 pound plate will never be off more than .9 pounds higher or lower.so the plates could be weighing 44.1, 44.2, 44.3,... instead 45lb, and the bar 43lb...and my squat could be 7-8 lb lighter (307-308 lb x 3)?that could happens...?
and does comercial gym owners usualy check/weigh their (those) plates?
