How to Overhead Press

How to Perform the Overhead Press

Shoulder Press
Shoulder Press

The overhead press; also known as the press, shoulder press, barbell press, and standing press; is often confused with the military press; and is quite possibly the best upper body exercise known to man. Sure, the bench press gets all the glory, but this is only because it is easier to lift more weight benching than pressing.

In many ways, the overhead press is actually more effective than the bench press at building upper body muscle mass. With the overhead press we are standing up rather than laying down, which already means a better workout for the back, legs, and core. And seriously, massive, powerful shoulders are far more impressive than a puffy chest.

MMA Workouts are Not Just for Men

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

The following guest post was contributed by Alexia Krause, a PR executive who is writing today about MMA Workouts for women.

MMA Workouts are not Just for Men

Mixed martial arts appears to be a male dominated sport, yet the number of women who are becoming part of the MMA community is continually growing.

There are many female MMA fighters (including Kaitlyn Young and Gina Carano), who follow the same rigorous regimens as their male counterparts. These inspiring ladies have broken open the doors to what used to be the “boy’s club” of MMA. They use the same techniques, MMA equipment, and exercises that most fighters would use.

How to Choose a Weight Bench
Choosing a Weight Bench

There is a ton of weightlifting equipment out there and the bench is one of the most important pieces.

As with all purchases, you should do your due diligence. Of course if you are ordering a weight bench or browsing the stores, you will want to do your initial research into product quality, customer reviews, and the amount of time the weight bench manufacturer has been in business.

After that, you should examine and try out each bench before you make your decision. Listed below are some common criteria for selecting a bench that will make you happy and keep you safe.

When to Choose Dumbbells, Barbells, and Machines

Monday, February 22nd, 2010
Swole Fitness Tips

There are so many choices out there for exercise equipment, sometimes it is hard to know what to choose. Free weights are always best – barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, odd objects, and even bodyweight. Machines have their place, but they don’t usually belong in your main training routine.

So how can you choose your equipment based on your training history, goals, and injuries?

UFEC I – Ab Lounge Sport vs. The Ab Wheel

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Welcome to the very first Ultimate Fitness Equipment Championship battle. This will be a lowdown showdown between 2 pieces of fitness equipment that I have used. I’ll break down the good and the bad, then I’ll make my recommendation for best piece of equipment. Ready?

Let’s get it on!

UFEC I – Ab Lounge Sport vs. The Ab Wheel

VS. Ab Wheel
Ab Wheel

This weekend my friend bought an Ab Lounge Sport from Target. He set it up in my living room, which essentially forced me to try it out. For a comparison, I used the results from my handy ab wheel to gauge the effectiveness of this Smurf-blue chair-like contraption.

Deadlifts
Deadlifts

I lift heavy.

Well, heavy for me at least.

Sometimes my grip strength doesn’t always allow me to lift a maximal weight for certain exercises. Typically this might happen with an exercise where I try to use more than my max deadlift or if I’m hauling around 150 lb dumbbells.

In these circumstances, I have to employ one of the following third party tools to help me hold onto the bar.

Building a Home Gym with Used Exercise Equipment

Monday, July 9th, 2007

There’s nothing better than to be able to walk outside, or go down stairs, and lift some weights. Sometimes it is expensive to build a full home gym set up. This is why I am starting to build my arsenal of used exercise equipment for extra workouts around the house. Clearly I will need more, newer, and better equipment that I currently have, but this is a start.

To date I have the following equipment:

  • two 45 lb Powerblocks
  • two ab rollers
  • springs
  • one rusty 45 lb olympic bar
  • one rusty 20 lb e-z curl bar
  • 200 lbs of old plastic weights that only fit on the e-z curl bar
  • one big ass heavy bag hanging from a hook in the shed + gloves
  • two pullup bars, neither of which are currently up
  • one grassy park with a river across the street from my house, which I will use for sprinting, doing pull-ups in the trees, tree climbing, boat rowing, and a variety of other activities
  • one piece of really awkward driftwood that is useful for lifting and carrying in various ways

I shall take some pictures and post them shortly. It is only July, so Project Swole is still in effect for the next two months. This will be my first week of being 100% my own boss and I anticipate weight training to resume in a 3-workouts-per-week schedule.
