I have been reading exercise and nutrition material written by a gentleman named Dr. John Berardi since the late 1990’s.

Since that time he has published 8 scientific abstracts; 15 scientific papers and textbook chapters; presented at nearly 50 scientific, exercise, and nutrition related conferences; and published countless articles online.

His first articles at Testosterone Magazine so many years ago, provided me with the basis for everything I know about nutrition today. Now I will turn some of that knowledge over to you in the form of Nutrition Tips written by Dr. Berardi himself.

Today’s Topic – Supplementing with Fish Oil

The 8 Worst Reasons to Lift Weights

Monday, November 24th, 2008

There are at least 100 good reasons to lift weights. Fat loss, muscle gain, sports specific training, powerlifting, general fat loss, and so much more. These are all great reasons to start weight training.

Have you ever thought there might be some bad reasons to lift weights? I was contemplating this while watching the New England Patriots stomp the Miami Dolphins yesterday, and I decided that the following 8 reasons to lift are probably ill conceived for the most part. What do you think?

Florida Gators vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Please tell me, how did Florida lose that game to Mississippi?

Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow

On September 27, 2008, the Florida Gators (10-1) lost 31 – 30 to Eli Manning’s college team Ole Miss (7-4), but if they had not lost that game they would probably be #1 or #2 in the nation and they would definitely have an 11-0 record rather than 10-1.

Update:
my bad, Florida is currently ranked #2 in the AP polls as of Sunday 11/23.

I mean Tim Tebow passed for 319 yards and one touchdown, and he rushed for another 2 touchdowns. Apparently the offense took the first and third quarters off, and the defense basically took the whole game off.

Health Ranker Bookmarklet For Your Browser

Health Ranker
Health Ranker

I am a social networking and social bookmarking addict. I have profiles on both Facebook and MySpace, and I bookmark URLs on such sites as Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Propeller, Reddit, Delicious, and HealthRanker. Some of those sites such as Delicious are simply for bookmarking, while others like Digg are for voting on, and commenting on, popular news stories.

Health Ranker is one of my favorite social bookmarking websites due to its health and fitness theme (I hear a new site is coming out soon targeted specifically for exercise and nutrition, but that’s a discussion for a different day). I’ve just never been able to get my hands on a browser bookmarklet for HealthRanker.com. All that changes today…

Training for the Week of 11/10 – 11/16

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

This was a very busy week as we saw a round of layoffs smash their way through our ranks at work. One of the principle software engineers was let go today, thereby increasing my workload. Due to this increased workload, I barely got in a second weight training workout this week. However, I did get in all 3 kickboxing workouts, which is still good news.

Also check out a squat demonstration at the bottom of this post.

Today’s Topic – Eating Pasta

Today we get to examine a nutritional strategy of eating pasta for maximal fat loss, strength gain, and health. I personally don’t mind pasta too much, at least whole wheat pasts, but let’s see what Dr. John Berardi has to say about it.

Training for 10/20 – 11/9

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Well, things have kind of fallen off a bit for a couple weeks. Between family medical issues, an increased workload, and a stubborn child, I have had recent difficult both making it to kickboxing and lifting weights. Because of this I feel myself becoming softer, smoother, and in poor cardiovascular condition. Eating junk food at Halloween didn’t help either.

Check out the Olympic front squat chick in the video at the bottom of this post, if you get bored with my training log rant.

What Are Zercher Squats?

Zercher Squats
Zercher Squats

In a recent training log, I mention Zercher squats as an alternative to barbell squats, and you might have asked, “What is a Zercher squat?”

So, What is a Zercher Squat?

The Zercher squat was developed by Ed Zercher, a well-known powerlifter and strongman from St. Louis who competed back in the ’30s. Rumor has it that Zercher’s home gym lacked a squat rack, so he would load a barbell on the floor, squat in front of it, hold it in the crook of his arms and lift the weight with his legs and lower back.
